Ozone is a safe, and effective clinical tool with a wide range of applications. The first ozone generator was developed by Nikola Tesla. Ozone is comprised of 3 oxygen atoms (O3); as such, it is a highly reactive molecule by contrast oxygen (O2) is a highly stable.

Ozone can inactivate bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeasts, and protozoa, by the stimulation of oxygen metabolism, and activation of the immune system. As ozone is a gas special application techniques had to be developed. Ozone has been shown to be beneficial for a wide range of clinical conditions, such as

MECHANISM OF ACTION

Ozone is a naturally occurring energy rich molecule. Ozone disrupts the integrity of the bacterial cell envelope through oxidation of the phospholipids and lipoproteins. In viruses, ozone damages the viral capsid and thus reproductive cycle by disrupting the virus.

Ozone causes an increase in the red blood cell glycolysis rate. This leads to the stimulation of 2,3-diphosphoglycerate which leads to an increase in the amount of oxygen released in the tissues. Ozone activates the Krebs cycle – an energy producing chemical reaction, by enhancing the production of ATP.

There is stimulation of production of enzymes which act as free radical scavengers and cell wall protectors: glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase. Prostacycline, a vasodilator is also in

CLINICAL APPLICATIONS

Ozone is excellent in treating musculoskeletal sources of pain – acute or chronic. Ozone injections is used for back pain, especially related to herniated discs. Studies have shown positive outcomes for intradiscal or paraverterbral ozone injections, with one trial showing superior efficacy the steroid infiltration. Analgesic effects of ozone have also been demonstrated in the treatment of sciatica, headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMI) disorder, and radiation induced proctitis.

CLINICAL APPLICATIONS IN PRACTICE

Conditions that can be treated:

  • Arthralgia (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, trauma and etc)
  • Strains and sprains
  • Ligament laxity
  • Trigger points
  • Nerve impingement
  • Disc herniation
  • Disc degeneration
  • Osteomyelitis

Ozone can be administered in numerous ways:

Intravenous administration – major autohaemotherpy

Injection – subcutaneous, or intra-articular

Ozone sauna

Cupping

Rectal insufflation

Bladder insufflation

Vaginal insufflation

When treating acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain, ozone is administered as an injection (referred to as prolozone  when combined with collagen producing substances ). This may be delivered in several ways: intra-articularly, intramuscularly, intradiscally or subcutaneously (intradiscal treatment are often administered with X- ray guidance).

Intravenous administration of ozone is called major autohaemotherapy (MAH). MAH involves the removal of upto 250 mls of venous blood into an IV bag, mixing it with ozone and then re-infusing it into the patient. In this manner it has an effect on the entire body and circulatory system. Ozone can also be administered to the whole body IV ozonated -saturated saline, rectal insufflation or cutaneous absorption via an ozone sauna.
